295 CENTRAL TRADES AND LABOR COUNCIL OF SHREVEPORT, HISTORY AND PAPERS, 1903-1980.

The first Central Labor Council was formed in Shreveport in 1903. It had representatives from five union locals: the Wood Workers, Barbers, Shoe Makers, Bakers and Electrical Workers. These papers outline the history of the Council and include photocopies of early charters, correspondence and membership lists.

297 YMCA RECORDS, 1912-1983.

Film 66: 15 ft. microfilm.

The Shreveport YMCA was first organized in 1912. It did not incorporate until the building drive for the YMCA Building at Travis and McNeil in 1923. These records include charter, articles of incorporation, minutes of the Board of Directors, Board reports and financial reports dealing with the organization. Also included are publications, scrapbooks and photographs relating to YMCA events and activities.

299 ARTHUR M. SAMPLE CORRESPONDENCE, 1863-1960.

Arthur M. Sample, a Mansfield, Louisiana resident, was a pilot of a B-17 "Flying Fortress" in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. He received his basic training at Barksdale Field, flight training at Coleman and San Angelo Fields in Texas, and graduated from advanced flying school in Lubbock, Texas. He flew many successful combat missions over enemy-occupied Europe. The bulk of this correspondence is from Arthur Sample at various army bases and in Europe to his family, 1941-1944. Also included are a few letters relating to the Marshall family of Land’s End plantation, 1845-1893.

300 COL. JOHN H. TUCKER (1891-1984) PAPERS, 1915-1996.

Col. John H. Tucker, Jr. began his law practice in 1920 with the firm Smitherman and Tucker. At the time of his death he was senior partner of Tucker, Jeter, and Jackson. Col. Tucker was the first president of the Louisiana State Law Institute. In 1954, he was appointed Honorary Consul for the French government in North Louisiana. He was awarded the French Legion of Honor in 1956. Col. Tucker was one of the originators of the Community Foundation of Shreveport-Bossier and was active in many community and civic affairs. Col. Tucker married Hortense Rigby in 1924. They were married for 60 years. These papers reflect Col. Tucker’s interest in cultural and civic affairs after his retirement from practicing law. The bulk of the material is correspondence regarding travel, clubs, civic and cultural organizations.
