261 E. B. HERNDON, SR. FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHS, 1880-1920.

Photograph Collection

E. B. Herndon, Sr. was born in Meade County, Kentucky in 1849. He came to Caddo Parish with his family in 1868. In 1871, he graduated from the University of Virginia Law School and then entered practice in Shreveport. He served the city as parish attorney and as parish treasurer and was a member of the city council. He married the former Mary F. Wise, and they had two children: Mary W. and E. B. Jr. These photographs consist of family portraits, one photo of the Herndon home at 959 Jordan, and one of Herndon’s offices in the old First National Bank Building.

262 WEBSTER PARISH COMMUNITY FAIR PHOTOGRAPH COLLECTION.

Approximately 800 photographs collected in 1983 during the Webster Parish Community Photographic Fair at the Webster Parish Public Library co-sponsored by the LSU-S Archives, Minden Bank and Trust Company and Webster Parish Public Library. These photographs depict Webster Parish citizens, places, and events during the course of Webster Parish history.

264 CADDO-BOSSIER URBAN LEAGUE RECORDS, 1976-1982.

The Caddo-Bossier Urban League was formed in 1979. As an affiliate of the National Urban League, its purpose was to broaden economic opportunities for minorities and to break barriers to black employment. The league’s failure to survive was largely due to the inability to secure United Way funding. These records consist of administrative papers, membership lists, minutes, correspondence, financial information, reports and project proposals.

265 SHREVEPORT RAILWAYS COMPANY RECORDS, 1917-1979.

In 1914, the Shreveport Traction Co. merged with other existing street railway companies and reorganized under the name Shreveport Railways Company. At this point all street railway trackage was owned by the same company. The company continued to operate under this name until the 1950’s, when it became known as the Shreveport Transit Company. These records consist mainly of photocopies of union contracts between the Amalgamated Association of Street and Electric Railway Employees of America, Division 558, and Shreveport Railways Company. Also included are some correspondence, tables and ledger sheets.

268 MRS. R. H. COOMBS MEMOIRS, 1860-1870.

Emma Pamela Stewart was born October 25, 1860 in Bossier Parish, daughter of Theodosia Martha Starr and James Jackson Stewart of Doyline, Louisiana. She married Richard Henry Coombs of Bossier Parish and they had a dairy in Ruston, Louisiana. These are memoirs of her childhood in Bossier Parish.

269 W. S. STUTSON DIARY, 1874-1877.

Journal kept by William Sterling Stutson, 1874-1877, when he was farming in Catahoula and Ouachita Parishes. Journal entries describe weather, farm and family activities including planting and harvesting crops, visits to neighbors and daily life.

270 W. CURREY SANDERS AVIATION COLLECTION, 1929-1961.

W. Currey Sanders, local pioneer aviator, began aviation training in the army in 1918. Became the first licensed pilot in Louisiana. Barnstorming in the 1920’s, he promoted Shreveport as an industrial center. Assistant chief pilot for Lockheed during World War II. Died September 24, 1957. Bulk of papers consist of aviation magazines that detail his life and accomplishments.
