191 LOUISIANA RAILWAY AND NAVIGATION COMPANY RECORDS, 1898-1932. |

The Louisiana Railway and Navigation Company, organized in
1896 by William Edenborn as the Shreveport and Red River Valley Railway Co., was
re-organized May 9, 1903, as Louisiana Railway and Navigation Co. It was known
as the Edenborn Line and was completed and placed in operation October 1, 1906,
as the short line between Shreveport and New Orleans. This line was owned
outright by Mr. Edenborn, the only railroad in the U.S. owned by one individual.
These property records include agreements and contracts for purchase and lease of
property and some correspondence. |

192 RANDLE T. MOORE (1874-1962) PAPERS, 1934-1968. |

Randle T. Moore was born in 1874 at Mooringsport, Louisiana.
He began his business career in 1901 in Zwolle, where he organized the Sabine Lumber Co.
In Shreveport, he was vice-president of the old City Savings Bank and Trust and
vice-president of the newly organized Commercial National Bank from 1921-1932.
His other business interests included Frost Lumber Co., Kansas City Southern Railway,
Louisiana and Arkansas Railroad, and the Commercial Building Company, which he owned
and directed until 1956. In civic affairs, he was a member of the Board of Trustees of
Centenary College, treasurer of the Shreveport Council of Boy Scouts, a director of the
YMCA, and past president of the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce. These papers include
correspondence concerning his interest in many charitable organizations from 1934-1956.
Also included is correspondence and accounting records pertaining to his succession,
1962-1968. |

Penn Courtney was a member of the Board of Directors of the
Community Concert Association from 1945 through the 1960's. During that time, he
served in official capacity as both president and program chairman. He was also
vice-president and program director of the Shreveport Civic Opera Association
during the 1960's. These papers include programs, scrapbooks and correspondence
relating to the Community Concert Association, 1936-1969. Also included is
publicity material and programs relating to the following organizations:
Shreveport Civic Opera Association, The Met in Dallas and New York, New York City
Civic Theatre, New Orleans Community Theatre, and the Philharmonic Symphony of New York. |

195 HENRY LEVY (1815-1876) PAPERS, 1852-1933. |

Henry Levy came to Shreveport from Mississippi in 1852.
He was a prominent merchant, member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and
the Royal Arch Masons. He and his wife, Mathilde (d. 1916), moved into the
Levy home on Cotton and Market in 1857 and occupied the house for 65 years.
These papers include photocopies of membership certificates to the Order of
Odd Fellows and the Masons, and clippings that trace the history of the Levy home. |

Collection Inventory |
In June of 1972, a group of concerned citizens in cooperation
with LSU-Shreveport and the North Louisiana Historical Association, co-sponsored
the first North Louisiana Preservation Conference. Out of this meeting,
Historic Preservation of Shreveport was formed. The first president was Goodloe Stuck.
The original objective of the group was to inventory buildings and sites that might be
termed "historic." The ongoing objective of the group is to stimulate public awareness
of our local heritage. These records include inventories and other information on
historic buildings and sites, information on the Shreveport Society and other
historic preservation groups around the country, and information on
preservation techniques. |

Alex Knight was a land owner and real estate developer
in the Shreveport–Caddo Parish area. He leased farm property, participated in
the development of the Shreve City area, and owned and operated a Butler Building
business known as Knight Buildings Inc. These papers include correspondence
relating to his properties and his Butler Building business, genealogical materials
on Knight and related families, corporate and annual reports and other business
related publications. |

Graydon Smart was editor of Shreveport Magazine and later
of River Cities magazine. This collection includes one folder of 17 teletypes of
Pearl Harbor bulletins and a plaque of the first River Cities magazine cover,
December, 1981. |

Grand Cane, Louisiana, and was disbanded in September, 1980. |

200 LOUISIANA STATE COUNCIL OF CARPENTERS RECORDS, 1941-1976. |

The United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of
America, in its constitution and by-laws, authorized each state to establish
a state council of carpenters. The Louisiana Council meets once a year to
discuss problems and coordinate programs. These records include minutes,
convention proceedings, correspondence, ledger sheets and bond reports. |
